Dear Students, Parents, and Community Members,

Our entire school district celebrates the amazing accomplishments of our staff.  Recently one of our school nurses, Kathy Schneider, was recognized as one of the top ten nurses in the state of Iowa!   She is brilliant, nurturing, competent, and personable.  We are so blessed to have school nurses who are dedicated to the health and well being of all of our students and staff. When interviewed Kathy said she wanted to share credit with the other school nurses, Joyce Kuster, Jill Smith, Julie Griffin, Kathryn Menke, and Esther Murphy.   Nothing is more important than the health and safety of our students.  Our outstanding school nurses and clinic clerks not only help students during the day:  they also make referrals to community service agencies to make sure all students are getting the help they need for optimum health.

Our art teachers are also tremendously talented!  I have to mention Christopher Mulder, Paula Bolander, Donna Phipps, Tony Onesto, Geralyn Lloyd, Pamela Deierling and graphic arts teacher, Betsy Wolf. Every year our art students win awards and do creative service learning projects. We are one of the few high schools that have advanced art studio classes, ceramics, and multiple art forms. I invite the community to visit our schools to see the proud displays of student artwork. We are currently in the planning stages of a district-wide art show to be held at the Mercy Building of Great River Medical Center during the week of May 7th

Finally, let me say how much our schools benefit from our community volunteers.  Recently the Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club donated funds for our Aldo Leopold After- School program.  The DKG sorority has donated school supplies and volunteered to help with the art show reception.  A large number of people volunteer in our classrooms on a regular basis. I see them in the hallways listening to children read, working with math facts, or helping in our computer labs.  Our students’ lives are enriched by the dedicated men and women who volunteer each day.
Overall, I feel we are so fortunate to have such great staff, students, and community members. Together we are making a difference!

New Ethnicity Requirement Print

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Each year, every school district in Iowa is required to report student data by race and ethnicity to the Iowa Department of Education. Iowa must report this information to the federal government. The Iowa Department of Education reports school level data and does not report individual student data to the federal government.

Recently, the federal government changed the procedures for identifying race and ethnicity. Not only do the changes allow individuals to more accurately identify themselves, but it also matches the race and ethnicity collections on all other federal reporting like the Census. Because of the new reporting categories for race and ethnicity, you will need to update your child’s data. Starting with the 2009-2010 school year, all schools in Iowa will report student data to the Iowa Department of Education using the new categories.
