The Burlington Community School District offers an active band program for its students. Formal band instruction begins in 5th grade. Students will be given the chance to try-out several band instruments at the beginning of the school year. The music staff helps each student select an instrument on which to begin lessons. The 5th grade band has one large group rehearsal on Tuesdays from 4:00 - 4:45 p.m. in the BHS Band Room. Schedule permitting there may also be small group rehearsals once a week before school at each elementary building. The 5th grade band performs two or three concerts during the school year including participation in the Festival of Bands.
Middle School Band is available for students enrolled in grades 6-8. Several concerts are scheduled during the school year. Weekly lessons are given to help students develop their playing skills. Students also have the opportunity to tryout for jazz band. Additional opportunities include playing in small ensembles, performing a solo, and trying out for regional honor bands. Bands from both middle schools combine to perform during the annual Festival of Bands concert at Memorial Auditorium. In the fall the 8th graders march with the BHS marching band during a pre-game show at a home football game.
The High School Band offers several performance opportunities for its students. All students participate in Marching Band during 1st quarter. The Marching Band performs at all home football games, area parades, and completes its season with a performance at the State Marching Band Festival. Near the end of the marching season students audition for placement in one of two concert bands. The concert bands perform at four concerts, Graduation, and the State Large Group Contest.
The high school program also offers two jazz bands, a brass ensemble, woodwind ensemble, percussion ensemble, and two pep bands (which perform at all home varsity basketball games). The jazz bands are open to all students and placement is via an audition. Students in the jazz program perform at two concerts, various local events, and the State and SEIBA Jazz Band Festivals.
Students enrolled in band also have the opportunity to participate in the All State Music Festival, SEIBA Honor Band, SEIBA Honor Jazz Band, University of Iowa Honor Band, Augustana College Honor Band, Western Illinois University Honor Band, and the State Solo and Ensemble Festival.
